    For Immediate Release: 20 May 2019 Release No.: 19-20 Lake Shelbyville – Registration is underway for the 2019 Wild About Nature series at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center! Sessions take place on Thursday mornings in June and July. Any children from birth to 12 years old are welcome to attend. Birth to 5 years old meet from 9:00-10:00AM. Ages 6-12 meet from 10:30-11:30AM. Participants will check-in at the Visitor Center front desk upon arrival. A responsible adult must accompany anyone birth to age 3. Adults are not required to stay for all other ages. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Thursday, June 6: Get Outdoors & Move Thursday, June 13: Let’s Build Fish Habitat Thursday, June 20: Magic in Nature Thursday, June 27: Backyard Birding Thursday, July 4: No sessions Thursday, July 11: Recycling with Woodsy Owl Thursday, July 18: Water Safety Wars Thursday, July 25: Painting Class Each program session includes an educational lesson and craft or activity. There is no cost to attend Wild About Nature, but pre-registration at least 1 day in advance is required. Campground programs are on the agenda for Saturday evening and rangers will be on beach and lake patrol throughout the weekend.
  • Loop Lake Shelbyville Bike Ride

    For Immediate Release: 24 April 2019 Release No.: 19-17 Loop Lake Shelbyville Bike Ride Lake Shelbyville – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Friends of Lake Shelbyville are hosting the 6th Annual Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride on Saturday, June 8, 2019. All rides will start from the Lake Shelbyville Visitor and will include options for a 22 mile, 47 mile or a 65 mile ride. Proceeds for the ride will benefit the Friends of Lake Shelbyville (FOLS). The FOLS provides education, historical interpretation, recreational and environmental improvements at Lake Shelbyville. Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride starts at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center. Rest stops will be provided every 10-13 miles for riders with water and snacks available. The 22 mile ride will take riders to Findlay and back to the Visitor Center. The 47 mile and 65 mile routes will loop Lake Shelbyville, ferry across the lake and head back to the Visitor Center. Registration and check-in at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 8:30 a.m. Riders may start riding after they have registered or checked in. Participants should plan their route to be back at the Visitor Center no later than 3:00 pm. Requirements: Riders must be over the age of 14 years. If under the age of 18, riders must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All riders will be required to wear a helmet for the duration of the ride and obey all applicable Illinois State rules of the road. If registered by May 24th participants will receive a t-shirt! Paid camping will resume on Sunday, May 12.   • 2019 Recreation Season at Lake Shelbyville

    For Immediate Release: 15 April 2019 Release No.: 19-16 Lake Shelbyville – The recreation season is upon us and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville would like to announce 2019 campground & public beach season dates. All camping facilities, with the exception of Lone Point Campground, are on target to open on their scheduled dates. All beaches are also on target to open as scheduled, weather permitting. Fish cleaning stations and restrooms are open, with the exception of Lone Point, and all courtesy docks are in place.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at Lake Shelbyville is looking for individual or groups that would be interested in adopting a garden space, for free! The program is a volunteer-based activity where area volunteer groups or individual can “adopt” and maintain designated sections of flowerbeds located outside the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center.

  • Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day

    Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day Lake Shelbyville - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Alliance will place donated Christmas trees and artificial structures into Lake Shelbyville to enhance the fisheries on March 16, 2019. Volunteers with large jon boats are needed as well as volunteers on shore to help bundle and place trees in boats. To volunteer, meet at the Lone Point Recreation Area boat ramp parking lot by 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are required to sign in prior to starting work at 9:00 a.m. A free lunch will be provided.

Lake Shelbyville offers a great work experience opportunity for those students who plan to make a career in biological sciences, outdoor recreation, or law enforcement. Temporary student positions are available for graduating seniors and college students at the GS-02 level. These positions are available in Interpretive Services, Visitor Assistance, Facility/Grounds Maintenance, Environmental Stewardship, and Administration with an hourly rate around $11.68 and a 40 hour per week work schedule during the summer term. Candidates may be required to work a combination of days, nights, weekends, and holiday shifts.
