The Kaskaskia River Project hosted a renaming ceremony in honor of Former Congressman Costello, a longtime advocate of the river and the communities that rely upon it,, Nov 6, 2014. The Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 renamed the lock in recognition of his commitment to the Kaskaskia River watershed.
Located in Modoc, Illinois, Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (formerly the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam)is part of the Upper Mississippi River Nine Foot Navigation Project. The Project, authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1930, created and ensured a nine-foot deep navigation river channel.
