  • Great Kaskaskia River Duck Race Changed to Duck Pluck

    CARLYLE LAKE - The 22nd Annual Kaskaskia River Duck Race returns to the Carlyle Lake West Spillway on Saturday, July 13, 2013, the event will have the same format as last year. Due to high pool levels and increased releases from the Carlyle Lake Main Dam, the event has been changed to the “Great Kaskaskia River Duck Pluck”. Thousands of ducks will be securely placed on land in a fenced area located in the West Spillway. A designated official will be blindfolded and randomly choose the winning ducks. The owner of the winning duck will be awarded $5,000 and nine additional prizes will be issued to the runners-up. The top four runner-up prizes include four St. Louis Cardinal Tickets, a Pandora Bracelet, Sunday Brunch for four people at Krieger’s at the Holiday Inn Atrium in Mt. Vernon, and a gift basket and wing tray from Dairy King in Breese.

Dam West, Coles Creek, and Boulder Campgrounds are open with sites available on a first-come-first-serve basis and through reservation by calling the National Recreation Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or online at www.recreation.gov. McNair and Dam East Campgrounds are open on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Eldon Hazlet State Park is also open and has sites available first-come, first-serve or online at www.reserveamerica.com

    Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, yet the number of deaths by drowning could be reduced drastically if everyone would wear a life jacket. Statistics show that 89 percent of those who drown at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lakes and rivers may have survived if they had worn a life jacket. Here are some safety tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.

  • Lake Shelbyville set to accommodate maximum holiday weekend crowds

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville anticipates a very busy upcoming holiday celebration over the next 10 days. The Lake is open for all visitors to enjoy and should have plenty of water. As of June 28th, and with no additional rainfall, the lake is projected to crest on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 611.5 feet above sea level (referenced to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD)). On June 28, at 7:00 a.m., the lake level was 610.40 feet above sea level NGVD, which is 10.70 feet above normal summer pool (599.7 feet above sea level NGVD).

    Wappapello Lake is the place to enjoy Independence Day activities. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers welcomes you on Saturday, July 6th, for the Annual Ranger Willie B. Safe’s Wet ‘n Wild Waterfest. This FREE event is co-sponsored with the SEMO Regional Water Safety Council and will be held at the Redman Creek Beach from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day use fees will be waived at the Redman Creek Beach for the event. Concessions will be provided by the Wappapello Volunteer Fire Department.
