  • Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam Dedication Ceremony

    CARLYLE LAKE – On Thursday, November 6, 2014 a dedication ceremony will be held to commemorate the renaming of the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam. The ceremony will be held at ten o’clock in the morning adjacent to the pavilion at the upstream boat ramp of the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam (formerly the Kaskaskia River Project Lock and Dam).

  • Kaskaskia River Clean-Up Success

    Volunteers from the Kaskaskia Mariners Association participated in the first of two scheduled Kaskaskia River Cleanup Days on Saturday, March 15. The clean-up was a big success with volunteers filling a 20 cubic yard dumpster during the event. The cleanup effort was concentrated in the New Athens portion of the river. Lunch was provided for all that participated by Smitty’s at the Marina.

  • Kaskaskia Eagle Fest

    The Kaskaskia Eagle Fest event will be held on Saturday, February 1st, 2014 from 9am – 3pm at the Kaskaskia Lock & Dam in Modoc, Ill.

  • Recreation Areas Open at Kaskaskia River Project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reopened all recreation areas that were closed due to the government shutdown on Thursday, October 17th. This includes the Kaskaskia River Boat Access and Day Use Area upstream of the lock and dam. It also includes the Confluence Campground and Trail downstream of the lock and dam. The Mississippi River Boat Access is still closed due to low water conditions.

  • Kaskaskia River Project is Back in Business

    The Kaskaskia River Project, located near the mouth of the Kaskaskia River, is now back in operation for visitors to come and enjoy the recreation areas. The third largest flood experienced at the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam since the 1993 and 1995 floods has now receded enough to clean up the debris and facilities. The Kaskaskia River Boat Access and picnic shelter, located upstream of the lock and dam, are available for public use.

  • Pelicans Enjoy Kaskaskia River

    Kaskaskia River – The American White Pelicans have returned to the Kaskaskia River Project on their way north to their spring nesting areas. Pelecanus erythrorhynchos, is one of the largest birds in North America. These large and plump birds have an overall length between 50–70 inches, a wingspan of 9-10 feet, and average weight between 11 and 20 lbs. This primarily white bird has black-tipped wings, and a yellow bill that measures up to 15 inches in length.
