Camping

Mark Twain Lake offers a variety of camping opportunities ranging from primitive, hike-in sites to developed sites with water, sewer, and electrical hook-ups. Primitive campsites can be found along both Lick Creek and Joanna Trails, several of the hunter/fisherman access areas, and at the Indian Creek Hike-In campground. For those looking for a few more amenities, click on one of the developed campgrounds below to find out what each of them has to offer.

The Golden Passport Program expired December 31, 2006. Golden Passports are still honored at Corps recreation sites, but can no longer be issued by the Corps. The Interagency America the Beautiful Senior Pass for age-related discounts and the Interagency Access Pass for disability-related discounts have replaced the Golden Age/Golden Access Passport passes.

Frank Russell Campground Map

Frank Russell Campsites 1-60 will be closed for the 2023 Recreation Season. This closure will allow a safe environment for the public and allow contractors to provide campsite upgrades. Equestrian campsites (61-67) will remain open but will be without access to the dump station. Campers are encouraged to utilize the Ray Behrens Area dump station.

For those interested in staying near the dam, doing some horseback riding, or hiking the Joanna trail, Frank Russell is the place to stay. This campground features a nearby horse corral as well as easy access to the longest trail at Mark Twain Lake. The Frank Russell Recreation Area also features a beautiful environmental demonstration area complete with an ADA accessible fishing pond, various habitat types, and plenty of wildlife throughout the year.

Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and a paved parking pad. There are also several playgrounds and an amphitheater area available for use within the recreation area. The shower facility at Frank Russell is one of the largest on the project and is conveniently located near the center of the campground.
