The Kaskaskia River Project hosted a renaming ceremony in honor of Former Congressman Costello, a longtime advocate of the river and the communities that rely upon it,, Nov 6, 2014. The Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 renamed the lock in recognition of his commitment to the Kaskaskia River watershed.

The Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam, formerly the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam is located on the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi rivers at river mile 117. Operational since Nov. 9, 1973, the lock is 600 feet long and 84 feet wide, with a maximum lift capability of 29 feet. The dam features two 60-foot by 30-foot Tainter gates.
