The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was joined by the MTL FOREST Council, the Missouri Department of Conservation, Bass Pro Shop, and various community partners in celebrating the opening of a new, state-of-the-art archery park at Mark Twain Lake on Wednesday, May 31 . Located at the Frank Russell Recreation Area in Ralls County, it features an archery range with target distances ranging from 10 to 80 yards, a three-station youth archery range, and a 15-station 3-D archery trail through the adjacent woods. This facility was made possible by a Corps of Engineers Handshake Partnership Grant, a MDC Community Archery Grant, financial and resource support from the MTL FOREST Council, and a tremendous amount of volunteer services provided by neighbors and community members to make this new amenity a reality at Mark Twain Lake.

Even though the weather is colder, construction at the MTL Archery Park is still moving forward. D&M Construction is on site this week to construct the shooting line and the target access lanes at the Event Range. The concrete path surfaces will provide barrier-free access to all outdoor enthusiasts using the range.
In addition to the paths, D&M Construction is also building a concrete parking pad and the concrete floor for the shelterhouse. After the concrete is placed, installation of the target standards will begin.

Members of the Show Me Missouri Back Country Horsemen completed the grading of the perimeter and interior islands of the new Equestrian/Archery Trail Parking. This lot will serve for overflow parking for the equestrian campground, and for parking near the entrance of the Archery Trail.
Shooting station markers were also placed on the archery trail. The archery trail has 15 targets. Each target has two shooting location providing 30 total shots on the trail.
In addition, the parking lot at the event range was recently completed as well.
On-going efforts include:
- Roof structures for the target standards have been built for the archery trail. Anticipate installation the first week of November
- Awaiting installation of the concrete components at the event range
- Awaiting arrival of pavilion structure
- Construction of target standards for event range to begin the first week of November

Development is progressing at a fast pace on the Mark Twain Lake Archery Park. Members of the Back Country Horsemen, Whitetails Unlimited, the MTL Archery Park group, Missouri Department of Conservation, and Boy Scouts from the Great Rivers Council contributed 186 hours of service on October 7 and October 8 to assemble and install archery target standards, clear arrow flight paths, and clear maintenance trails.

The development of the Archery Park is picking up speed. Recent work has been completed on the archery trail to permit pedestrian traffic across drainage features. In addition, the perimeter safety fence has been installed. There are two major work efforts that will be occurring over the next two weeks. Starting on Friday, Oct 7, the target standards will be built and installation will begin on the archery trail. In addition, construction of parking lots at the archery range and the archery trail will begin.
A work day is scheduled on Saturday, October 8 to clear arrow flight paths and maintenance trails on the archery trail, and to install target standards. On Saturday, October 22 work will focus on placing base rock on the parking lots and installing the remainder of the target standards on the archery trail.

The MTL Archery Range is progressing very well. If you passed by the area this week, you would have seen some big changes. The area where the archery range will be located was leveled and graded to accommodate drainage. In addition, the archery trail clearing was completed by our friends from Northeast Missouri Electric Power Cooperative utilizing a piece of equipment traditionally utilized to clear right of ways. Moving forward, we will begin grass establishment on the event range, clearing target access paths on the archery trail, and begin construction of the archery target standards when the material arrives.
