Waterfowl Refuge and No Hunting Zones at Mark Twain Lake

Published Oct. 15, 2013

Mark Twain Lake – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages a waterfowl refuge on the Middle Fork and Elk Fork branches on Mark Twain Lake during the waterfowl season.  The refuge provides approximately 3,000 acres of habitat for migratory waterfowl to feed and rest before continuing south towards their wintering grounds.

The waterfowl refuge will be closed October 26, 2013, to December 24, 2013.  The refuge will be posted with signs and lake buoys to indicate the prohibition of all boat traffic and waterfowl hunting.  Visitors are reminded that Corps of Engineers boat ramps remain closed due to the government shutdown; however, the Highway 107 and Route U boat ramps at Mark Twain State Park, as well as the boat ramp at Indian Creek Marina remain open, allowing lake access.

Hunters are also cautioned that other designated no-hunting zones exist in various recreation areas around the lake, including the Mark Twain State Park.  These zones protect visitors who are hiking, camping, and fishing during the hunting seasons.
