Volunteering at Lake Shelbyville

Without volunteers, many projects would not be completed and the service we provide to visitors would be less. Individuals and groups alike, give their time and talent to Lake Shelbyville. As stewards of the 11,100 acres of water and 23,000 acres of land we appreciate the assistance of each person. As a volunteer you gain valuable skills, work outdoors, meet new people, see new areas, and achieve a sense of contributing to the future of the lake.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at Lake Shelbyville. These opportunities range from one day for a few hours to volunteer positions of several months. Volunteers assists with a variety of things that help create a more enjoyable visit for the recreationist and/or help the environment. Volunteer help in many ways some of them are: staffing the visitor center, presenting interpretive education and interpretive programs, cleaning bathroom facilities at campgrounds, mowing grass, planting trees and other vegetation, picking up trash, assisting with fish counts all the while being great stewards of the land.

Volunteers can be individual or groups. There are groups that have committed to taking care of trails like The General Dacey Trail Work Crew and Central Illinois Mountain Bike Association. Multiple Boys Scouts groups contribute to projects including installing plant identification signs, constructing bridges and tail maintenance.

There are also special work days or events that happen throughout the year when we invite all to come and participate. Examples are Earth Day and National Public Lands Day. You can find more information on the dates and work locations when it becomes available below.

There is always a need for volunteers at Lake Shelbyville. There are many things that we are not able to complete without the help from volunteers.
