Summer Employment Internship Position at Carlyle Lake
CARLYLE LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at the Carlyle Lake/ Kaskaskia River Project is currently seeking someone who is interested in a Student Conservation Association (SCA) Public Safety Internship position for summer employment. SCA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to build the next generation of conservation leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. The SCA Public Safety Intern will work under the supervision of USACE park rangers as they work together to encourage public safety to those who are recreating on USACE-managed public lands and waters.
The SCA Public Safety Intern will primarily be promoting boating and water safety with an emphasis on communicating that to the highest risk group of 18-35 year old males. Training in boating and water safety interpretation/education will be provided. The intern should be comfortable interacting with persons of varied ages and backgrounds. They need a valid driver’s license and minimal physical ability that may require extended periods in the outdoors during adverse conditions such as heat, cold, or rain. The intern may work from 12 to 16 weeks starting in the late May and going through early September but that time frame is negotiable. Applicants must be at least 18 years old for this position but there is no age maximum.
The intern will receive an $85 per week stipend and be reimbursed for mileage to and from work. Qualifying interns are offered the opportunity to apply for an AmeriCorps Education Award that can be used for college tuition or repaying qualified student loans. SCA/AmeriCorps enrollees also receive deferment and/or zero interest rates on qualified student loans during their service.
These internships provide students opportunities to gain valuable real-world, hands-on experience for a resume. Interns may receive academic credit depending on the college they attend.
