Mark Twain Lake, Monroe City, Missouri - Mark Twain Lake is experiencing higher than normal water levels due to the recent rainfall in the watershed. The lake is expected to crest at less than 622.5 NGVD by Wednesday, June 24, with no additional precipitation. The normal pool elevation is 606 NGVD. The John F. Spalding and Indian Creek beaches and four Hunter Fishermen Access Areas are currently closed due to the high water. Those Access Areas are Access Area 11 at Rt. N, Access Area 20 at Rt. FF, Access Area 30 at Rt. U and the Duane Wheelan Recreation Area. The Joanna and Lick Creek Trails are also closed. These areas will reopen as soon as water levels recede. All remaining Corps of Engineers recreation areas including campgrounds and major boat ramps remain open for public use.
Visitors are reminded to be aware of an increased amount of floating and submerged debris due to the high water and use caution when boating or swimming. It is always a good idea to wear a life jacket.
