CARLYLE LAKE - The 23rd Annual Kaskaskia River Duck Race returns to the Carlyle Lake West Spillway on Saturday, August 30, 2014, the event will have the same format as last year. Due to maintenance work and the closure of the bridge deck on the main dam, the event has been changed to “Celebrate Duck Day Event”. Thousands of ducks will be securely placed on land in a fenced area located in the West Spillway. A designated official will be blindfolded and randomly choose the winning ducks. The owner of the winning duck will be awarded $5,000 courtesy of the Maschhoffs and nine additional prizes will be issued to the runners-up. The top four runner-up prizes include four St. Louis Cardinal Tickets donated by Imming Insurance, Sunday Brunch for four people at Krieger’s at the Holiday Inn Atrium in Mt. Vernon, a gift basket and wing tray from Dairy King in Breese and gift basket including four passes to the 2015 Balloon Fest in Centralia, IL.
Ducks are available for adoption at a variety of locations, including the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center and local banks. Ducks can be adopted individually for $5.00 each, but special “Quack Packs” are available in amounts of $25, $50, $100 and $200. “Quack Packs” come with an array of discounts and gift certificates to go with multiple duck entries in the event.
All proceeds from Celebrate Duck Day support the Healthcare Foundation, which provide educational programs, emergency services and medical supplies for individuals and families living in Clinton, Marion, Washington and Jefferson counties. Over one hundred individuals received help last year, so even if your duck isn’t one of the winners, your adoption dollars support a good cause.
