Volunteers to help with nature trails at Wappapello Lake

Published June 10, 2014

Wappapello Lake –  June 9, 2014:  The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is pleased to announce they have recently recruited volunteers to assist with trail maintenance.  All trails managed by the Corps of Engineers at Wappapello are part of the National Recreation Trail System.

Mingo Job Corps has agreed to adopt the Johnson Tract Nature Trail near Greenville.  This is a 5-mile loop nature trail that hosts lots of wildlife and has an old growth hickory-oak forest.  Their experienced staff and students will provide a valuable service while gaining experience in tree felling and natural resources management.

W.E. Sears Youth Center has adopted Lost Creek Trail located northeast of the dam.   This 1-mile nature trail has been designated as a Watchable Wildlife Trail. Maintaining the trail will provide the center with a quality outdoor experience for the young people while helping the community.

Boy Scout Troop #416 has the Pine Ridge Trial adopted and helps maintain it periodically by removing trash and debris.

The Memory Lane Trail located in the Greenville Recreation Area is listed on The National Register of Historical Places.  You can actually walk down the old sidewalks that lined the old town of Greenville which was moved to the current location just two miles north.  Mr. Donald Foulk has volunteered to manage this trail and maintain the recreation area.

The Wappapello Lake Section of the Ozark Trail is 31 miles long and starts just south of Sam A. Baker State Park and stops at the parking area located on Highway 172 near York Village.  The Ozark Trail Association volunteered to work on the section from Highway F south to County Road 546.

We are always looking for individuals or groups who would be interested in adopting sections of this trail.  All help would be appreciated.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Natural Resources Specialist John Daves at 573-222-8562 to get more information.
