CARLYLE LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will host a Great Outdoors Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center to commemorate National Park Trust’s (NPT) Third Annual National Kids to Parks Day. This event is open to children ages 5 to15. A parent or gaurdian will be required to accompany children who are between the ages of 5 and 10. Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by the scavenger hunt at 9:30 a.m. Participants will have an hour to complete the hunt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers who find all the items on the scavenger hunt list. All participants will receive prizes. After the hunt, park rangers will present “Natures Treasures” an environmental program to educate participants about the natural items on their scavenger hunt list.
At a time when an obesity epidemic affects nearly 1 in 3 children who are either overweight or obese, communities are witnessing sky-rocketing rates of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated cholesterol levels in children. Parks and cities across the nation are committing to a simple motto: “active kids are healthy kids” and encouraging their residents to use National Kids to Parks Day as the first of many days spent outdoors or at local parks and recreation sites to develop a more active and healthy lifestyle.
