Bald Eagle Presentation to be held at Carlyle High School

Published Jan. 13, 2014

CARLYLE LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation with the Carlyle High School will be hosting a program presented by the World Bird Sanctuary.  “All About Eagles” will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014, beginning at 12:30 p.m. located in the Carlyle High School Gymnasium.  The World Bird Sanctuary will have a live bald eagle to demonstrate the majestic flight and nature of this beautiful bird.  After the presentation, eagle viewing will take place at the Carlyle Lake Main Dam and the General Dean Recreation Area. Maps of these locations will be available.  Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and dress accordingly for the weather.

On January 11th and 12th Carlyle Lake staff members performed an annual “Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey” at Carlyle Lake.  Thirty-five mature and ten immature eagles were identified and recorded in three counties in the Carlyle Lake area. With 83 miles of shoreline, Carlyle Lake offers excellent habitat for eagles and has all the resources available for their survival.  The number of eagles visiting Carlyle Lake in past years has increased and many active nests have been located.  The population of Bald Eagles in Illinois has steadily increased over the past several years due to federal laws and conservation efforts that have been made to save these magnificent birds of prey.
