Lake Shelbyville – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is looking for motivated volunteers to staff the visitor center, clean facilities within the campgrounds and adopt trails. These positions are a very important part of successful operations at Lake Shelbyville.
The visitor center positions consist of staffing the reception desk. The main responsibilities include answering questions about the facilities at Lake Shelbyville and the surrounding area; stocking brochures and handouts; performing general housekeeping; and completing sales for the cooperating association. Volunteers may work alone or in pairs. The time commitment could range from one day a week for four hours up to four five-hour days a week. For volunteers who work 20 hours per week, a campsite with electricity, water and sewer is available at Dam West Recreation Area.
There are campground facility cleaning volunteer positions available at Lithia Springs and Lone Point Campgrounds. The main responsibilities of these positions involve cleaning the restrooms and showers in the campground. Ideally, this volunteer would work four days a week for a total of 20 hours. In return the volunteer would be able to stay at one of the volunteer campsites with electricity, water and sewer provided. While past volunteers preferred working in pairs, this volunteer can also work alone.
Groups or individuals can adopt a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hiking trail or section of a trail. This is a great opportunity for scout troops and organized school or community groups. Volunteers perform basic trail maintenance such as picking up litter, trimming along the trail, making minor repairs to bridges and steps, constructing erosion control structures, and reporting damaged or blocked trail sections that require major maintenance. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will provide the necessary equipment and materials.
