Flood Update at Wappapello Lake, May 3, 2017

Wappapello Lake – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake reports that significant rains received in the St. Francis watershed north of Wappapello Lake have caused the upper St. Francis River and Wappapello Lake to rise. As of 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, the Wappapello Lake elevation is 397.10 feet relative to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD) and is falling. At the time of this report outflow from the lake is approximately 14,800 cubic feet per second. The lake crested at 398.10 feet NGVD on Tuesday May 2, 2017 and outflow was approximately 22,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) at crest.

More significant rainfall is forecasted for the next two days over the watershed. With an additional 2 ½ to 4 inches of rain, the lake would be forecasted to crest near elevation 397.5 to 399 feet NGVD. The top of the Overflow Spillway is elevation 394.74 feet NGVD. The present discharge is approximately 14,800 cfs, but could increase to approximately 22,000 to 28,000 cfs if significant rainfall is received. This could happen as early as May 5th 2017.

Visitors to the lake are reminded that Missouri State Highway T has been breached due to flood waters and is closed until further notice.
