COLONEL ANTHONY P. MITCHELL assumes duties as the 51st Commander of the St. Louis District after serving as the Director, Operational Energy and Contingency Basing Task Force, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Army (Installations, Energy and Environment) with service in the Pentagon on 20 July 2013. In this position, he supported the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Energy and Sustainability) as the principal advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Energy and Environment) on matters related to operational energy and contingency basing.
Mitchell was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in 1992. He has served in numerous engineer leadership positions that include both command and staff assignments: Commander, Bravo Company, 168th Engineer Battalion, Fort Lewis, Wash.; Commander, Nashville District, Nashville, Tenn., United States Army Corps of Engineers; and Commander (Fwd), Iraq Area Office, Middle East District, United States Army Corps of Engineers, Baghdad, Iraq (in support of United States Forces-Iraq and the Office of the Security Cooperation-Iraq). He also held positions such as the J4 and J42 Engineer Staff Officer and Construction Branch Chief for Headquarters United States Forces Japan, Yokota Air Base, Japan. He served at Fort Hood, Texas, Baghdad, Iraq, Fort Lewis, Wash., and United States Army Corps of Engineers, Far East District, Seoul, Korea.
Mitchell completed his undergraduate studies at Prairie View A&M University as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; the Combined Arms Service and Staff School, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JPME II), Norfolk, Va.; and the College of International Security Affairs, National Defense University. Mitchell holds a Master of Science Degree in Engineering (Construction Engineering and Project Management) from the University of Texas at Austin; and a Masters of Arts in Strategic Security Affairs from the National Defense University.
Mitchell’s military decorations feature two Bronze Star Medals; the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, the Parachutist Badge, and the Army Engineer Association’s Bronze de Fleury Medal. Additionally, his professional recognition includes the 2012 Black Engineer of the Year Award Recipient for Professional Achievement in Government.
Mitchell is married and has three sons.
