Deputy Commander Major John Miller

Major John Miller assumed the role of Deputy Commander of the St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on August 19, 2019. As the Deputy Commander, he supports the District Commander and a civilian and military workforce of nearly 750 personnel in executing the diverse mission of providing civil works and interagency support along the Mississippi River in Missouri and Illinois. Prior to the St. Louis District, Major Miller served as the Trans-Atlantic Afghanistan District Kabul Base Cluster OIC from September 2018 to June 2019. 

Major Miller’s initial assignments were as a Combat Engineer Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer in the 5th Engineer Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He deployed to Saladin Province, Iraq (April 2003 – March 2004) while assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion. In September 2005, Major Miller was assigned to the 1st Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley, Kan., were he served as the Battalion Logistics Officer, Assistant Operations Officer and commanded the 111th Sapper Company. He deployed again to the Saladin Province, Iraq (September 2006 to December 2007) while assigned to the 1st Engineer Battalion. Following company command, Major Miller served as an Observer Controller at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, Calif. He then served as the Battalion Executive Officer and Operations Officer for the 11th Engineer Battalion at Fort Benning, Ga. In June 2014, Major Miller was assigned as an Observer Controller at the Joint Multi-National Training Center at Hohenfels, Germany. In June 2017, Major Miller returned to the United States and was assigned as the District Deputy for the Albuquerque USACE District.

Major Miller is from Hannibal, Mo. He graduated and earned his commission from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He earned a Master of Engineer Degree in Energetic Concepts from the University of Maryland College Park, and a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. Major Miller is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic Course, the Infantry Captain’s Career Course, and the Naval War College. 

Major Miller’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Valorous Unit Award (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Meritorious Unit Citation.

Major Miller is married to Armela Miller and has two sons Omar and Oren. They live in Fenton, Mo.
