Volunteering
A vital contribution at Wappapello Lake!
Volunteers make vital contributions to many projects at Wappapello Lake. Individuals, groups and organizations donate valuable time and talent to Wappapello Lake. As a volunteer, you get great rewards from what you do. Meeting people, gaining valuable work experience, helping others and a flexible work schedule are just a few of those benefits. In fiscal year 2010, 194 volunteers donated approximately 6,641 hours of service at Wappapello Lake. The value of these services is equivalent to $181,270.
Wappapello Lake had historic flooding during the spring of 2011. The lake stage reached a record 400.04 feet, with discharge of 30,500 cfs on May 3, 2011. Water flowed over the overflow spillway. The Corps of Engineers staged a flood fight prior to this event. More than 250 volunteers, who worked in excess of 400 hours assisted the Corps by filling sandbags and placing them along the overflow spillway to try and protect the infrastructure below.

Other volunteers like the Wappapello Lions Club contributes time and resources each and every year to aid the Corps of Engineers and the Community by providing countless volunteer hours and hot lunches for the WOODS and Roadside Cleanup Events. Additionally, the Lions Club have partnered with the Corps to provide the Festival Lights Christmas Auto Tour since its inception.
The Mingo Job Corps has proved to be a valuable resource for the Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake. They provide assistance for many special events each year to include; Spring Roadside Cleanup, Black Powder Rendezvous, Earth Day, Army Birthday Celebration, ACAT, Old Greenville Days and National Public Lands Day. Without volunteers like this, many Events would suffer.
The Corps of Engineers utilizes volunteers to operate the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center, assist with park maintenance and serve as park host.
