The Rivers Project Office is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 4 dams, 6 locks, 300 miles of dikes and revetment and 110,000 acres of public lands and water for the authorized purpose of maintaining a nine-foot navigation channel. The Rivers Project Office recognizes and manages the multi-purpose use of these lands and waters, which include fish and wildlife management, recreation, flood control, hydropower, navigation, and water supply and quality.

Locks 27 - Chain of Rocks Canal
Locks 27 is located on the Upper Mississippi River at river mile 185.5, near Granite City, Illinois. Construction of Locks 27 began in 1946 and was completed in 1953 at a cost of $40 million. Locks 27 and 8.4 miles of canal was constructed under supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis, to bypass the hazardous chain of rocks reach of the Mississippi River. The main lock is 1,200 feet long by 110 feet wide. The auxiliary lock is 600 feet long by 110 feet wide.  Use Marine Band Channel 12 to get locking information.

Melvin Price Locks & Dam (replaced Locks & Dam 26)
Melvin Price Locks and Dam is located on the Upper Mississippi River at river mile 200.78, two miles downstream from the original Lock and Dam No. 26, near Alton, Illinois. Melvin Price Locks and Dam replaced Lock and Dam No. 26. This is the first replacement structure on the Upper Mississippi River nine-foot navigation project. Construction of the Locks and dam began in 1978, completed in 1994, but the structure became partially operational in 1990. The structure consists of a dam, 1,160 feet long with 9 tainter gates, each 110 feet wide by 42 feet high. There are two lock chambers at Melvin Price. The main chamber is 1,200 feet long by 110 feet wide. The auxiliary chamber is 600 feet long by 110 feet wide.  Use Marine Band Channel 14 to get locking information. Daily tours are available at 10 a.m. 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tours are open to thre general public. Visitors can sign up for tours by visiting the adjacent National Great Rivers Museum. Large groups need to make reservations through the Alton CVB (800)258-6645.

Lock 25 - Winfield Lock & Dam
Lock and Dam No. 25 is located in the Upper Mississippi River at mile 241.4, near Winfield, Missouri. Construction of the lock and dam became operational in 1939. Total cost of construction was $8,687,600. The structure consists of a dam, 1,140 feet long with 14, 60 foot tainter gates and 3, 100 foot roller gates. The overflow dike is 2,566 feet long. The lock consists of one main chamber, 110 feet wide by 600 feet long.  Use Marine Band Channel 12 to get locking information.

Lock 24 - Clarksville Lock & Dam
Lock and Dam No. 24 is located on the Upper Mississippi River at river mile 273.4, adjacent to Clarksville, Missouri. Construction of the lock and dam began in 1936 and the structure became operational in 1940. The structure consists of a 600 foot by 110 foot lock chamber, a dam consisting of 15, 80 foot by 25 foot tainter gates and 2,720 foot submersible dike. Use Marine Band Channel 14 to get locking information.

Kaskaskia Lock and Dam
The Kaskaskia Lock and Dam is located on the Kaskaskia River at river mile .08 and the confluence at river mile 117 on the Mississippi River. Construction began in 1967 and the project became operational in 1973. The structure consists of a 600 foot by 84 foot lock chamber and 2, 60 foot by 30 foot tainter gates of the dam.
