Kaskaskia River Basin, Illinois, Restoration

AUTHORIZATION:  Section 5073 of Water Resources Development Act 2007



Location and Description:  The Kaskaskia River Basin, Illinois, from the headwaters at Champaign, Illinois, to the confluence of the Mississippi River, its backwaters, side channels, and all tributaries, including their watersheds, draining into the Kaskaskia River. A comprehensive watershed plan will be prepared for the purpose of restoring, preserving, and protecting the extensive natural resources within the Kaskaskia River Watershed. Specifically, the plan will address ecosystem restoration activities targeted at stream restoration and sediment control to improve water quality and reduce bank erosion; fish and wildlife habitat restoration; wetland creation; long-term resource monitoring; and reduction of flood impacts by means of ecosystem restoration. The plan will also contain measures to reduce ongoing headcutting and expedite activities that address "critical restoration" needs.
