BE
AT THE HEART OF THE CORPS
St.
Louis District Corps of Engineers
The
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, is an engineering
and water resource agency dedicated to maintaining a proper
and healthy balance of the multiple uses of our Heartland’s
waterways. We
support the community and environment through our mission
of navigation channel maintenance on 300 miles of the Middle
Mississippi River and 80 miles of the Illinois River. Student employees are
an integral part of the Corps and are considered valuable
contributors to the Corps mission.
The
Corps of Engineers also focuses on flood damage reduction,
environmental restoration and river engineering, water supply,
emergency operations and disaster response, regulatory oversight,
hydropower, recreation, Ordnance & Explosive Waste Program,
and Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (which
involves clean up of hazardous and toxic waste material connected
to atomic bomb production in the 1940s.
The
St. Louis District of the Corps is home to the Defense Department
Mandatory Center of Expertise for Curation and Management
of Archaeological Collections, and Directories of Expertise
for Photogrammetric Mapping and Dam Safety Monitoring.
We encompass 28,000 square miles with five flood control
reservoirs across Missouri and Illinois. The District’s five
locks and dams facilitate industrial and recreational traffic.
Our engineers must have the considerable and diverse
experience necessary to manage the river in a locks and dam
and an open river environment.
The
St. Louis District maintains a colorful career field spectrum
with approximately 850 engineers, biologists, geologists,
archaeologists, anthropologists, realty specialists, natural
resource management specialists, park rangers, cartographers,
scientists, resource managers, logisticians, and administrative
personnel. Such diversity within
the District allows for the innovation and creativity that
has brought about recognition throughout the engineering world.
The District’s expertise is requested in areas such
as Environmental Pool Management, aerospace technology, navigation,
flood damage reduction, erosion control, Micro Modeling technology,
Bendway Weirs, and fish habitat.
Students
play into the Corps mission as project team members under
journeyman professionals. The work provides tremendous
exposure, unique opportunities, and an exciting variety of
experiences. As
a student employee, you may conduct fieldwork on the Might
Mississippi, at one of our lake projects, or at a construction
or hazardous waste clean-up site. You will have the opportunity
for independent responsibility as well as team contribution.
Salary for students typically begins at $8.28 per hour.
