Memory Lane Historic Walk Restored at Wappapello Lake

Before restoration began.

After it was completed.

Wappapello, Mo., July 23, 2008 - The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is proud to announce the reopening of Memory Lane Historic Walk at the Greenville Recreation Area, which is located approximately two miles south of Greenville, Missouri.  Sections of this one-mile trail were heavily damaged due to the spring flood.  Restoration work consisted of repair of the boardwalks; clearing limbs, debris, and silt from sidewalks; and weed trimming along the trail.  Memory Lane was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in March 1990. This site is the location of the town of Greenville, Mo., which was relocated to present-day New Greenville when the lake was built. Numerous original concrete foundations and sidewalks still exist.  Some foundations are identified with wayside interpretive markers with photographs and text depicting former buildings and structures which once stood in those locations.
The Greenville Recreation Area also contains a modern campground with showers, a historic cemetery, day use area with picnic shelter, fishing pier, boat ramp, and dump station.  Upcoming special events at this recreation area include the 17th Annual Old Greenville Days on September 20 and 21, 2008, and the 30th Annual Old Greenville Black Powder Rendezvous on October 4 and 5, 2008.
