Carlyle Lake Status-July 18, 2011

Carlyle Lake – As of 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 18, 2011, the pool elevation of Carlyle Lake is 453.63 feet NGVD, with a release of approximately 3,640 cubic feet per second (cfs). Yesterday's inflow was 950 cfs. The target pool elevation is 445.0 feet NGVD.

Due to the elevated pool, recreation opportunities at the lake are impacted. Dam West, Boulder, McNair and Dam East Spillway Campgrounds are open; however, the entire Coles Creek Recreation Area remains closed. As the pool level continues to recede, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to reopen facilities as quickly as possible. In addition, several private campgrounds around the lake remain open. Eldon Hazlet State Park is open and has numerous campsites available. The Dam West, Dam East, Apache and Boulder High Water Boat Ramps are open along with Horseshoe Island, Keyesport, General Dean and the City of Carlyle Boat Ramps. More

How do Dam releases upstream affect the St. Louis area?

Current conditions and the National Weather Service forecasts indicate only minor flooding is expected in the St. Louis area. However, there is always risk associated with flooding, and there is a potential for higher water if above normal rain falls in the watershed.

The St. Louis District is tracking this event, and we are in constant communication with the National Weather Service, other Corps Districts, levee owners, emergency management agencies and other federal, state and local authorities to communicate any changes.

A range of possible Missouri River stages is below. The flood stage, minimum and maximum projections are included. Below average rainfall could mean lower stages than shown here. However, if we should receive significant rains on top of those releases, we could see gage readings of up to 33' at Hermann, 32' at Washington, and 37' at St. Charles.

River Guage Flood Stage Minimum* Maximum**
Herman 21 27 33
Washington 20 23 32
St. Charles 25 28 37

*Minimum-expected stage with max releases from Gavins Point and average rainfall

**Maximum-expected stage with significant rainfall
