Education at Wappapello Lake

Wappapello Lake maintains an on-going and extensive Customer Services Program.  Public education, safety programs, nature walks, gatehouse tours, campground and special request programs are designed to increase the public's understanding of the role of the Corps of Engineers.  Interpretive programs are also conducted off-site for groups, organizations and businesses.   Program subject matter includes water safety, environmental stewardship and awareness, natural resources management and recreation. 

Wappapello Lake, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation, provides Missouri certified Hunter Education Courses at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.

The Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center  opens May 2010.  

May 1-24     Weekends Only    10a.m. - 4p.m.

May 28 - September 6   Daily    (Sun - Thur) 10a.m - 5:30p.m.   (Fri -Sat) 10a.m. - 9p.m.

Starting August 6  Friday hours 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Saturday hours 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.

                         September 11 - October 31  Weekends Only 10a.m. - 4p.m.

 
   


Water Safety 

Water safety programs are conducted to help safety at the three beaches.  They are conducted on weekends, Memorial Day through Labor Day and are available upon special request.  On July 4th weekend, Ranger Willie's Wet - N - Wild Waterfest treat people to fun and games, while focusing on water safety  

Bobber the Water Safety Dog and Corkey the Robotic Boat assist staff with Water Safety Education Programs.  The use of these Water Safety Icons helps to leave a lasting impression on visitors. 

 

Environmental Stewardship

Natural resources management topics are presented to schools and a variety of groups to inform individuals of management techniques as well as the diversity of wildlife and opportunities found at Wappapello Lake. 

 

Interpretive Outreach Program

Many programs are conducted for students throughout the school year and during the summer.  These programs include water safety, featuring Ranger Willie B. Safe, wetlands and animal adaptations.
