LAKE SHELBYVILLE WHITLEY CREEK CAMPGROUND UPDATE

Lake Shelbyville, February 4, 2004 – The Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is announcing the permanent closing of the Whitley Creek campground.  The campground was planned to close upon the relocation of the campsites to the Forrest W. “Bo” Wood campground in Spring  2006.  Lake Shelbyville’s funds will be directed to the current project needs of operation and maintaining existing facilities.  The closing of the campground is in accordance with the approved Lake Shelbyville Master Plan.  Lack of electrical hookups, deteriorating comfort stations, and other age related problems at Whitley Creek have prompted the Corps of Engineers to relocate the 86 campsites to the Bo Wood Recreation Area.  Consolidation of the two camping areas will benefit the public with more modern and better designed facilities. The Bo Wood campground is located near State Highway 32 and south of Sullivan, IL. The increase in visitors to the area, once the two campgrounds are consolidated, will benefit the local economy and will have a positive impact on long-term operation and maintenance for the Corps of Engineers.  The Bo Wood campground currently experiences the highest occupancy rate of any campground at Lake Shelbyville.  Adding the 86 upgraded campsites in the future will dramatically increase both the capacity and the efficiency of the Bo Wood campground.
