Hiking & Biking Opportunities at the Rivers Project

Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary
Hikers have a choice of five trails ranging from one to three miles each. Interpretive stations explain the flora and fauna of the wetlands as the trails weave through tall prairie grass and around the Alton Lake.

Confluence Bike Trail
This 21-mile asphalt trail begins at Russell Commons Park in Alton and extends south to Granite City. The trail runs adjacent to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, National Great Rivers Museum and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail
Beginning at Piasa Park, this 20-mile paved trail runs along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway from Alton to Pere Marquette in Grafton. With its towering bluffs and rolling waters of the Mississippi River, this is one of the most scenic trails in Illinois.
