Riverlands Important Birding Areas

The Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary has been listed as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the Audubon Missouri, the Missouri state office of the National Audubon Society (http://mo.audubon.org/). The following is an introduction to IBA’s provided by the Audubon Missouri and in coordination with the Riverlands Environmental Stewardship program.

The IBA program, started in 1981 by BirdLife International in Great Britain, is a global effort to identify the areas that are the most important for maintaining bird populations, and focus conservation efforts on these areas. The Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary was designated as an IBA as the result of the combined efforts of citizen scientists (birders) and ornithological experts. As an IBA, a coordinated effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Audubon Missouri , St. Louis Audubon Society, and citizen scientists, the EDA will develop a continuing, focused conservation effort to maximize the effectiveness of the area for maintaining bird populations. For more information about IBA’s, please visit the Audubon’s IBA website – http://www.audubon.org/bird/iba/index.html.
