  • Army Corps of Engineers promotes water safety this summer season

    Summer is almost here and that means millions of Americans will be planning visits to our nation’s lakes and rivers. As the steward of many of these public waters, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reminds visitors to be aware of the importance of practicing safe, sensible and thoughtful activities in and around the water.

  • Lake Shelbyville Kids Fishing Tournament

    For Immediate Release: 20 May 2019 Release No.: 19-19 Lake Shelbyville Kids Fishing Tournament Lake Shelbyville – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is hosting a free fishing tournament for children 12 and under on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Opossum Pond. The pond is located near the entrance to the Opossum Creek Recreation Area. Participants are encouraged to pre-register by calling 217-774-3951 ext. 2, though it is not mandatory. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. for the age 6 and under category, and participants will fish from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. for the age 7-9 and 10-12 category, and participants will fish from 10:00 a.m. to11:00 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish in each age division. All children will receive a certificate for participating. The tournament will be limited to bank fishing only. All participants are required to bring and wear a life jacket. Fishing equipment (including tackle and bait) is not provided, and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Lake Shelbyville is WILD about Nature

    For Immediate Release: 20 May 2019 Release No.: 19-20 Lake Shelbyville – Registration is underway for the 2019 Wild About Nature series at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center! Sessions take place on Thursday mornings in June and July. Any children from birth to 12 years old are welcome to attend. Birth to 5 years old meet from 9:00-10:00AM. Ages 6-12 meet from 10:30-11:30AM. Participants will check-in at the Visitor Center front desk upon arrival. A responsible adult must accompany anyone birth to age 3. Adults are not required to stay for all other ages. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Thursday, June 6: Get Outdoors & Move Thursday, June 13: Let’s Build Fish Habitat Thursday, June 20: Magic in Nature Thursday, June 27: Backyard Birding Thursday, July 4: No sessions Thursday, July 11: Recycling with Woodsy Owl Thursday, July 18: Water Safety Wars Thursday, July 25: Painting Class Each program session includes an educational lesson and craft or activity. There is no cost to attend Wild About Nature, but pre-registration at least 1 day in advance is required.   • Carlyle Lake Celebrates Kids to Parks Day

    CARLYLE LAKE – To celebrate National Kids to Parks Day and the Illinois High School State Bass Fishing Finals, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with Academy Sports + Outdoors, Henkel’s Hook and Arrow, and Fishing and the Outdoors, will host “Fishing Frenzy” on Saturday, 18 May 2019 from 1p.m. to 3p.m. at the Dam West Boat Ramp. Participants will visit stations that will teach them the basics skills of fishing. Stations will include: casting, fish identification, knot tying, fish anatomy, types of bait, and water safety. Each station will have a challenge for participants to complete. Prizes will be awarded to participants that complete every challenge. Stick around after the event to see the IHSA State Bass Fishing Finals weigh-in at approximately 3:30.

  • Dam West Boat Ramp Closed Temporarily for IHSA State Bass Fishing Finals

    CARLYLE LAKE - The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Bass Fishing Finals are being held at Carlyle Lake Friday, 17 May 2019 – Saturday, 18 May 2019 at the Dam West Boat Ramp in the Dam West Day Use Area. To accommodate tournament activities, the Dam West Boat Ramp will be closed from Monday, 13 May 2019 at 10:00 p.m. through Saturday, 18 May 2019 at 6:00 p.m. Visitors should use Allen Branch and Apache Boat Ramps located in Eldon Hazlet State Park or the Dam East Boat Ramp and Keyesport Boat Ramp which will be available to the general public during this period.

  • Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers coordinate transit of vessel through water closure zone

    ST. LOUIS – The Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers coordinated the safe transit of a vessel, scheduled to provide emergency support for flood damage, through a high water closure zone in the St. Louis Harbor, Friday.

Campground programs are on the agenda for Saturday evening and rangers will be on beach and lake patrol throughout the weekend.

  • High Water in the Mississippi River Valley

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Protecting people, infrastructure, commerce, agriculture and energy are always at the forefront of what we do at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division (MVD). National Weather Service (NWS) analyses show a high pressure area located near the Southeast coast of the United States and a large trough out west. “This is the same pattern seen in most of the significant flooding events in the Mississippi Valley over the past 120 years, including the high water experienced earlier this year,” said Bill Frederick, senior NWS meteorologist and NWS liaison at the Mississippi Valley Division. NWS model guidance suggests this pattern will continue through at least the middle of May and will produce areas of very heavy rains across the Mississippi watershed. Currently, models show the heaviest rains falling over the Arkansas/Red/White/lower Missouri/middle Mississippi/Illinois valleys.

  • Corps of Engineers activates Emergency Operations Center

    St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, activated its Emergency Operations Center as part of its continued readiness posture and response to rising forecasted river stages. The EOC will operate seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Loop Lake Shelbyville Bike Ride

    For Immediate Release: 24 April 2019 Release No.: 19-17 Loop Lake Shelbyville Bike Ride Lake Shelbyville – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Friends of Lake Shelbyville are hosting the 6th Annual Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride on Saturday, June 8, 2019. All rides will start from the Lake Shelbyville Visitor and will include options for a 22 mile, 47 mile or a 65 mile ride. Proceeds for the ride will benefit the Friends of Lake Shelbyville (FOLS). The FOLS provides education, historical interpretation, recreational and environmental improvements at Lake Shelbyville. Loop Lake Shelbyville bike ride starts at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center. Rest stops will be provided every 10-13 miles for riders with water and snacks available. The 22 mile ride will take riders to Findlay and back to the Visitor Center. The 47 mile and 65 mile routes will loop Lake Shelbyville, ferry across the lake and head back to the Visitor Center. Registration and check-in at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 8:30 a.m. Riders may start riding after they have registered or checked in. Participants should plan their route to be back at the Visitor Center no later than 3:00 pm. Requirements: Riders must be over the age of 14 years. If under the age of 18, riders must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All riders will be required to wear a helmet for the duration of the ride and obey all applicable Illinois State rules of the road. If registered by May 24th participants will receive a t-shirt!
