Celebration of National Public Lands Day at Carlyle Lake

CARLYLE LAKE The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Carlyle Lake is celebrating National Public Lands Day on Friday and Saturday, September 26th and 27th, 2014 in the Dam West and Dam East Recreation Areas.  National Public Lands Day (NPLD) is the nation’s largest volunteer effort for public lands.   Join more than 175,000 volunteers and participants around the nation to beautify the land, improve fitness, and enjoy the outdoors.

       On Friday, September 26th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the University of Illinois Extension is asking for volunteers to help with the removal of invasive plant species, trail resurfacing and placement of interpretive signage on the Chipmunk Nature Trail.  Volunteers are asked to meet at the picnic shelter near the trailhead at the top of the hill in McNair Group Camping Area C off old Rt. 50.  Those volunteers who contribute a total of 8 hours will receive a certificate for one free night of camping at Dam West, Dam East, McNair, Coles Creek or Boulder campgrounds.  Lunch and gloves will be provided for volunteers.  Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes or boots and clothing appropriate for trail work.   

     On Saturday, September 27, 2014 the 3rd annual B3 Carlyle Lake 2k, 5k, 10k and Half Marathon will be held in the Dam West Recreation Area.   Participants can also register the day of the event and pick-up race packets from 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.  All races will start at the beginning of the main dam service road in the Dam West Recreation Area and will proceed down the Main Dam, Saddle Dam II and III.  Turn around points for each race will be well marked.  The Half-Marathon (13.1Miles) begins at 8:30 a.m., 10K (6.2Miles) begins at 8:35 a.m., 5K (3.1Miles) begins at 8:40 a.m., and the 2K (1.2Miles) begins at 8:45 a.m.  Following the race, awards will be handed out in the following order: 2K, 5K, 10K and Half Marathon.  The award ceremony will be held near Dam West Day Use Shelter 2.
