Central Stone Quarry
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program contractors use a hand auger near Central Stone Quarry at the confluence of Coldwater Creek and the Missouri River to collect soil samples during ongoing efforts to find and remediate radioactive waste stemming from Manhattan Engineer District and early Atomic Energy Commission activities in north St. Louis County. After traversing challenging terrain, the team endures the physically intensive work of twisting the hand auger through native soil, often primarily clay, to collect the necessary samples at intervals of every six inches for up to ten feet below surface.
